What are Drugs?

Barry Bonds during his Pittsburgh and San Francisco days. The picture speaks for itself.

On March 31, 2016 in American Sport in the 21st Century we talked about what drugs are and why athletes should not take drugs. Drugs are chemicals that change the way that our bodies work. The drug that will be talked about are performance enhancing drugs. Athletes should not use drugs because it gives an unfair advantage, they are against the laws of sports and they set a bad example for young kids that look up to athletes.

Performance Enhancing Drugs have become a big part of baseball in recent years. The top stars seem to be the ones using them, and you think to yourself how many others are using these drugs. Barry Bonds who is arguably one of the best baseball players ever, will forever have his legacy tarnished because his name is linked to PEDs. He broke the career home run record with 762, and most home runs in a season with 73. His personal strength trainer from the Bay Area, Laboratory Cooperative Organization, was indicted by a federal grand jury for supplying PEDs. In 2003, Bonds had to testify and he kept on denying that he knew he took PEDs. Bonds was indicted in 2007 with obstruction of justice and making false statements. In 2011 he was convicted on the obstruction of justice charge, which was then upheld in 2013. The result of that was, Bonds had 30 days of house arrest and two years of probation. Bonds was not elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year, and he might not ever be. Even though he was a great player, he still took PEDs. The same goes for players like Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens. They are great players, but the fact they took PEDs may keep them out of the Hall of Fame forever.
