Deviance in Sport

On March 29, 2016 in American Sport in the 21st Century we talked about deviance in sports, and it is it out of control. Deviance is an act or person that differs from the norm, especially behavior or attitudes that differ from acceptable social standards. An example of deviance in sport is illegal recruiting classes.

Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville Florida has been investigating reports that there has been illegal recruitment of student athletes by coaches and schools. This goes along the lines of wanting to win at all costs. An example is a coach using his day job as a security guard to go gain access to middle school football players on the current roster. The middle school official found out and alerted Duval County Public School officials. Another example is coaches from rival schools trying to have the athletes transfer. The high school athletic director found out about it when the athletes told him. The public schools now are educating parents about the rules and regulations about eligibility and recruiting at the high school and middle school levels. New coaches are required to pass an exam about the rules now.
